Influence of intermaxillary fixation with arch bar on the periodontal tissues in the patients having fractured jaw

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to establish probability and reproducibility of gingivitis and periodontitis through measuring the probing pocket depth, probing level of attachment and sulcus bleeding index followed by intermaxillary fixation on the 10patients having fractured jaw.
Probing pocket depth, probing level of attachment and sulcus bleeding index were measured on the maxillary and mandibular cuspids and bicuspids before intermaxillary fixation, at the 4 weeks after intermaxillary fixation and at the 2 weeks after removal of intermaxillary fixation and establishment of oral hygiene care.
The result of this study were as follows:
1. Significant increase in the gingival inflammation and probing pocket depth could be seen at the 4 weeks after intermaxillary fixation and slight increase in the probing level of attachment could be seen.
2. Significant decrease in the gingival inflammation and probing pocket depth could be seen at the 2 weeks after removal of intermaxillary fixation and establishment of oral hygiene.
Further loss of probing attachment could be seen even in the continued oral hygiene procedure.
3. Only a few sites(23.33%) progressed into the destructive periodontal disease.
